Rajinikanth is gearing up for the release of Jailer 2, the much-awaited sequel to his 2023 blockbuster. At the film’s pre-release event, the superstar opened up about his hesitation to do sequels and revealed what convinced him to return for the Nelson directorial. He also revealed that he was offered Baasha 2 and Petta 2 as well.
Rajinikanth on doing Jailer 2
At the film’s pre-release event, Rajinikanth spoke about his apprehension about sequels and revealed why he broke the rule with Jailer 2. He said, “I’m generally not keen on sequels because I feel they take the first part, add a little extra flavour, and turn it into another film. I was approached for Baasha 2, and Karthik Subbaraj also came to me with a story for Petta 2, which would have extended Vijay Sethupathi’s character. But I wasn’t interested in either sequel.”
“After Jailer was released on OTT, I watched the film again. Towards the end, when I am about to kill Varma, he warns me that he has a huge network and that they won’t spare me. Also, Jailer has three containers worth Rs 1,000 crore. So, I felt there was a perfect story for a sequel,” he said.
About Jailer 2
Rajinikanth returns as the lead in Jailer 2, along with Krishnan, Yogi Babu, Mirnaa and Rithvik, who will reprise their roles from the first instalment. The upcoming sequel will also see the addition of several actors to its cast, including S. J. Suryah, Mithun Chakraborty, Suraj Venjaramoodu, Vidya Balan, Anna Rajan and Jatin Sarna.
Helmed by Nelson, Jailer 2 is scheduled to release in theatres on October 15, 2026, coinciding with the festive window of Dussehra 2026. A few days ago, the film was cleared by the CBFC with a U/A certificate ahead of its release. Meanwhile, its certified runtime is 165 minutes and 18 seconds, which makes the film approximately two hours and 45 minutes long.
The state government has approved a temporary ticket-price hike for the film during its opening week. The revised rates will remain in effect for seven days. The order allows single-screen theatres to charge Rs 50 above the usual admission rate, while multiplexes can add Rs 75 to their standard ticket price. The film will witness a box-office clash with Vijay Deverakonda and Rashmika Mandanna’s Ranabaali.
