Thalapathy Vijay’s Jana Nayagan is unable to see the light of day due to the ongoing legal feud with the CBFC. While the makers have withdrawn the writ petition against the committee, the release continues to remain uncertain. Amid this, a Canadian distributor has shared an update and hinted at the film’s release on April 30.
Canadian distributor shares update on Jana Nayagan release date
The latest update came not from the makers, but from Canadian distributor York Cinemas. The statement was posted with the caption, “Important Announcement of Jananayagan. From York Cinemas Management.” It read, “Dear Patrons, please note that the movie Jana Nayagan will not be releasing before April 30. If you have any pending tickets and your refund has not yet been processed, kindly contact our theatres to have it arranged at the earliest.”

“All our loyal membership holders will receive priority booking access once the new release date is confirmed. Thank you for your patience, understanding, and continued support,” it added.
About Jana Nayagan CBFC row
Jana Nayagan, projected as actor Vijay’s final film before his full-time foray into politics, was slated for a January 9 release, coinciding with the Pongal festival. The producer, KVN Productions, had approached the High Court, alleging an unreasonable delay by the CBFC despite compliance with all modifications suggested by the Examining Committee.
According to the producers, the application for certification was submitted on December 18, 2025. Following a personal hearing, the Examining Committee, through a communication dated December 22, 2025, recommended certification under the ‘UA 16+’ category, citing violence, fight sequences, gory visuals, and brief references to religious sentiments.
Certain excisions and modifications were directed, which the producers claimed were fully implemented, and a revised version of the film was resubmitted on December 24. The modifications were verified on December 29, after which the producers were informed that the ‘UA 16+’ certificate would be granted.
However, matters took an unexpected turn when a complaint from one of the committee members raised concerns about certain themes and visuals in the movie, particularly regarding their potential impact on public sentiment. As a result, the film was referred to a revising committee, delaying certification and prompting the makers to approach the court.
During a hearing held on February 10, the Madras High Court permitted the producers to withdraw their plea. This decision effectively closed the legal chapter of the dispute and allowed the film to continue through the CBFC’s standard review process. However, the release date continues to remain uncertain.
