Jana Nayagan CBFC row: Supreme Court to hear plea on January 15

Jana Nayagan, starring Thalapathy Vijay in the lead role, was slated for release on January 9, 2026, coinciding with Pongal this year. However, as the CBFC certification is still pending, the makers were forced to postpone the release, leaving many fans and audiences disheartened. While the matter is currently being heard in the Madras High Court, the makers have now moved the Supreme Court, challenging the order passed by the High Court’s division bench.
SC to hear Jana Nayagan’s plea on THIS date
As per PTI, the Supreme Court is slated to hear, on January 15, the plea filed by the producer of Vijay-starrer Tamil film Jana Nayagan, challenging an interim order of the Madras High Court that stayed a single-judge direction to grant CBFC clearance to the movie.
According to the cause list of the apex court, the matter is likely to come up for hearing on January 15. The bench is yet to be assigned.
On January 9, the Madras High Court stayed a single judge`s order directing the CBFC to immediately grant a censor certificate to Jana Nayagan, leaving the fate of actor-turned-politician Vijay`s film, which has drawn attention for its political overtones, in limbo.
KVN Productions LLP filed an appeal against the order passed by a division bench of the High Court last Friday, which put on hold the single bench`s directive to the board to issue the film`s certificate forthwith.
Theri re-release postponed
Just days after uncertainty hit Jana Nayagan, the planned theatrical re-release of Theri has now been officially postponed. “As per the request from the producers of upcoming releases, we have decided to postpone the release of Theri,” shared V Creations on social media.
Producer Kalaipuli S Thanu addressed the media in Chennai. He revealed that several films were eyeing the same festive dates and that producers of those projects had approached him directly.
Jana Nayagan features Vijay in the lead, alongside Mamitha Baiju, Pooja Hegde, Prakash Raj, Bobby Deol, Gautham Vasudev Menon, and Priyamani. The film is significant as Vijay’s final cinematic release before his full-time entry into politics.
Taking to their official social media handles, KVN Productions uploaded a video clarifying the entire controversy. They said, “We wish to place certain facts before you while respectfully acknowledging that the matter is currently sub judice, which limits what we can and cannot say.”
