Ranabaali: Vijay Deverakonda says film not made for box office numbers

Vijay Deverakonda and Rashmika Mandanna’s Ranabaali has finally hit the screens following a month-long delay. The film has been receiving a mixed response from audiences since its release. Amid the film’s weak box office performance, Vijay opened up about the film expressing confidence in the film that it will be remembered as one of the best Telugu films of 2026.

While speaking at a press meet on Friday, Vijay said that the film was made with a purpose beyond just getting big box office numbers. He also opened up about its impact and the special place it would hold in his career. “When I watched the film yesterday, I felt that it would be one of the best Telugu films of the year. I had said during the pre-release event that this film would make Telugu cinema proud,” he said.
Calling Ranabaali his 14th film, Vijay added that some projects leave a lasting impression on audiences. “Even after making 25 or 30 films, there will be certain films that people will talk about forever. The impact of those films and the performances in them will remain in people’s hearts,” he added.
Vijay also stated that he believes the film would become a hit, pointing to the messages and reviews he had been reading online. The actor added that Ranabaali was made with a purpose while praising director Rahul Sankrityan, saying, “We did not make this film merely to deliver a hit or achieve huge box office numbers. Its purpose was much bigger. We felt this was a very important story to tell our people. The way Rahul has presented it is remarkable.”
Notably, the film’s reviews were disabled from ticketing platforms after its release.
About Ranabaali
Ranabaali is a period action-drama film set in 1870s South India during the devastating Madras Famine of 1876–1878. Vijay plays Singanamala Bobbili Ranabaali, a brave warrior who fights against severe colonial oppression to save his people during one of the most violent periods in Indian history.
Notably, the film was originally scheduled for September 11, 2026, before it was postponed to October 16.
Ranabaali marks Vijay and Rashmika’s first film after their wedding earlier this year and their third film together, after Geetha Govindam and Dear Comrade.
